While researching WiFi quality in (premium) airport lounges (a long road so far… haven’t found that the question has been tackled yet, not even a website for collecting comments from travelers…), now a related detour. There are some articles giving their rating of WiFi in public spaces of different airports. Mainly commenting on the WiFi speed & whether it is free. Changeable info. from year to year depending on WiFi system upgrades (or not) at specific airports. Some of their commentary/their opinions follow. (Your own research and/or thinking may also be necessary.)  

Whether it’s fast (updated) public area WiFi seems an important rating. WiFi might be even faster if (in same airport) in a lounge having a separate WiFi network just for the lounge occupants. Because then less people overall using it on the lounge’s network. I see comments that 2 premium lounges of the same brand but in 2 different airports, can yield 2 quite different WiFi experiences. WiFi performance “all” appears to depend on the state of overall infrastructure in that whole airport.

Personally, I have 2 criteria (rating) suggestions for “best” WiFi:

– how secure it is (haven’t found); &

– how fast it is (I have found some ratings for this).

Since I have not (yet) found articles/commentary comparing security/privacy of the WiFi in different airports…Without knowing this, I personally would err on the ever-cautious side, & e.g. never do anything financial (nor process private/personal data) online.

I see recent infos. on the Ookla website (which has periodically been sharing analysis/speeds regarding ~50 U.S. airports… re their free airport WiFi offerings). They most recently noted ongoing improvements at some airports.

& Comments included in Ookla’s earlier (May ’23) article regarding some int’l. airports:
– Shanghai Pudong (Int’l.) was the fastest non-U.S. airport rated. Followed by (in speed descending order):

– Charles de Gaulle Airport (Paris);

– (Amsterdam’s) Schiphol Airport;

– Dubai Int’l. Airport; &

– Frankfurt Airport.

Article opined that speed at all of these above: “should be okay unless you should want to try multi-player gaming”.

While 2 Mexican airports (Cancun & Mexico City) showed speeds in the slow range.  

A separate travel article (on a website based out of Turkey) is telling us that airport with best WiFi in the World (cited from “two comprehensive studies made by Electronics Hub [has a website based in India] & Seasia Stats”) notes:

 – “Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia emerged as global leader in Wi-Fi service” in both of those studies.
