I am not a professional computer tech. nor I.T. trained. I keep reasonably informed (I believe & hope). You may wish to follow along with my thoughts about travel WiFi security ideas I research & share here, being my own personal opinions & points of view. Your own thinking & conclusions are also necessary. Hopefully I can save you some time by sending some of your thoughts in helpful directions & towards useful questions.
Okay; I haven’t (yet) been to an airport lounge that offers foot massage. Some relaxation built into a long travel day, by booking in to a premium lounge, I have appreciated. Although so far I use my own (personal) portable internet hotspot when traveling, an additional WiFi opportunity has occurred to me. I mostly use my internet travel hotspot in either my hotel room or cruise ship (sleeping) cabin. I also purchase a daypass to a premium airport lounge if I have a lengthy airport layover (3 – 4 hrs. makes the cost worth it to me). I haven’t used my internet hotspot there.
It occurs to me that I may be missing out on one of the (included) services in those airport lounges. Is there fast & more secure WiFi there?
My beginner questions include:
-
is WiFi in a (premium) airport lounge, also premium level?
-
is the WiFi high speed? (faster than other public WiFi in the airport?)
- does the WiFi there have more/better security?
I am pretty good at searching out internet info. Yet so far I do not find all the answers to my above questions. My usual tendency is to dig further and/or start doing my own research. & Apply some logic.
I have already seen multiple comments leading to beliefs that inside some airport lounges, the WiFi is:
-
a network dedicated to that lounge (not the same public WiFi network as the rest of the airport);
-
tending to be higher speed inside such lounges; &
-
one of the included services that make lounges (to me) worth paying for (I have my limits how much I will pay…).
I did not find much commenting yet whether it tends to be a more secure network. An important question for lots of us.
Some of the questions I might start asking staff at airport lounges:
-
Do you have comments about the WiFi in this lounge (compared to out in the rest of the airport?).
-
How secure is the WiFi network here? (E.g.: on lunch break, would you be comfortable logging on to do some banking?).
-
Can you comment: do you think some brands of airport lounge have more secure WiFi than others?
-
Can you comment: do you think particular airports have more secure WiFi networks?
-
Can you comment: do you think airports in particular countries have more secure WiFi networks in their airports?
-
Is there an internet tech. here or in this airport’s customer service that might have comments on these questions?
Now I am getting quite curious. I may try to do some traveler polls on social media. I will probably start asking some internet techs. and/or travel bloggers these questions (e.g. manager of the passengers’ internet centre on cruise ship(s)).
& I may circle around to this topic again. More than once.
