Recently a probable leap forward happened for speed & reliability of Internet/WiFi service on cruise ships. Happier days: probable. In Summer last year 2022 when I found out, I started to write on LinkedIn about the impending introduction of Starlink satellite WiFi service on many cruise ships. The rollout has been progressing quite rapidly with more than one major cruise line signing up for this service. How fast & reliable would it actually be?
Initially, curious passengers had some broader rollout questions such as: how much total bandwidth would be shared between the thousands of passengers on a ship? Going forward, might the speed be throttled and/or the amount of data per passenger capped/rationed? Because both speed throttling & data rationing might likely keep overall costs lower for the cruise lines.
Cruise vloggers soon began reporting back on their internet speed test results while onboard the first ships implementing Starlink service. General verdict: definite improvements!
